Ohio Amish Adventure
Our three day tour will take you through lovely Ohio countryside which is home to the largest Amish community in the world! We will pass hundreds of Amish homes and farms, share the roads with buggies and Amish on bikes, see how farming is still done with just horse and human power and learn a bit about Amish history, culture and customs. We will spend our first night in Berlin (accent on the Ber) where we will visit the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center and have the opportunity to stroll through the unique shops before we meet for dinner. Our second night will be in small town of Coshocton, home to Roscoe Village, the beautifully restored Ohio and Erie Canal port town. It won’t be hard to imagine what 19th century life was like as you walk the streets, enter the quaint shops and interact with craftsmen in period costumes during a tour just for us. You might also want to find time to walk through the Gardens of Roscoe which will be in their late summer glory. Dinner will follow at one of the premiere wineries/restaurants in the area. The Rides:
A major advantage of cycling in this area is that car drivers have a lot of experience with slow moving buggies and Amish on bicycles. We think you will find them to be careful and courteous.
The rides on all three days include hills and a couple of steep and/or longish climbs. We have kept the rides fairly short for this reason and we believe that cyclists who are reasonably fit will enjoy these routes. There are significant stretches of gentle terrain as well. And our SAG service will be but moments away if needed.
Thursday, August 20 Millersburg to Berlin
We will meet in Millersburg and depart around noon. Our first day of riding is a short but challenging 18 mile route. We should encounter little traffic on rural roads that sometimes resemble the narrow roads of Europe.
Friday, August 21 Berlin to Coshocton
This is our longest day at 35 miles. The route passes through the small villages of Charm, Farmerstown and New Bedford. We won’t be very far into our ride when we will make a stop at Guggisberg Cheese Factory where you can purchase cheese and leave it in our SAG vehicle. Baby Swiss Cheese was invented at Guggisberg. That’s right…in Ohio…not Switzerland! You might want to stock up on snacks and sweets at other nearby establishments.
Saturday, August 22 Coshocton to Millersburg
The third and final day of cycling is 31 miles through one of the most rural areas of Ohio. We will pass through scenic farmland and woods and travel along Killbuck Creek to the small town of Killbuck where we move from the road to a paved rail-trail. And not just any rail-trail as this one has a second lane for Amish buggies! Our ride will end in Millersburg where we began this tour. There are two challenging climbs on this route but much of it is gentle and the final 7 miles on the trail are flat.
Meals:
Thursday - dinner is at Berlin Farmstead next to our hotel in Berlin.
Friday - breakfast is at Der Bake Oven in Berlin.
Friday - lunch will be picnic style on the road.
Friday - dinner is at Raven’s Glen Winery near Coshocton.
Saturdday - breakfast is at our hotel.
Saturday - lunch will be picnic style on the road.
Lodging:
Thursday - Berlin Grande Hotel in Berlin.
Saturday - Coshocton Village Inn & Suites in Coshocton.
Tour Price:
$ 650 per person for those sharing a hotel room
$ 800 per person for those who will have their own hotel room
Prices include lodging in Berlin and Coshocton, two restaurant dinners, two breakfasts, two rest stop picnics of deli items, fresh fruit, drinks and more. Luggage handling, SAG, maps, cue sheets and friendly, cheerful service are also included.
